The VS-300 had a single lifting rotor with a cyclic-pitch control for roll and pitch and also included a single tail rotor for use in both directional and anti-torque control.

In May of 1942, Sikorsky made the first cross-country helicopter flight from Stratford, Connecticut to Dayton, Ohio, a distance of about 761 miles (1,268 kms), and started to make his fame and fortune by subsequent US Government purchase orders for several hundreds of VS and many other helicopters, such as R-4, R-4B, also produced by Sikorsky.
